Today’s topic is Understanding Cardiovascular Disease - Secrets for a Healthier Heart While Exploring Causes, Symptoms, and Prevention.

Understanding Cardiovascular Disease - Secrets For A Healthier Heart While Exploring Causes, Symptoms, and Prevention Podcast, Episode #79 Transcript!

Today, we're diving into some critical topics on understanding cardiovascular disease and exploring ways to prevent and manage it effectively.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally, so it's vital to get informed and take proactive steps for our heart health. Whether you're looking to learn more about the science, hear personal anecdotes, or find practical advice, we've got you covered. Let's get started!

Understanding Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular disease, or CVD, is an umbrella term for a range of disorders affecting the heart and blood vessels. It includes coronary artery disease, heart attacks, strokes, heart failure, arrhythmias, and peripheral artery disease, to name a few. It's often called the "silent killer" because it can progress without symptoms until a major event occurs.

Globally, millions of lives are impacted by cardiovascular diseases. In fact, according to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases account for approximately 31% of all global deaths. That's a staggering figure, highlighting why awareness and prevention are so crucial.

Forms of Cardiovascular Disease

Let's take a closer look at the different forms of CVD:

  • Coronary Artery Disease (CAD): This occurs when the arteries supplying blood to the heart muscle become narrowed or blocked. It's the most common type of heart disease and can lead to heart attacks.

  • Stroke: This happens when the blood flow to your brain is interrupted mostly from a clot blocking a blood vessel. It’s a leading cause of disability and can have life-altering effects.

  • Heart Failure: Also known as congestive heart failure, this condition arises when the heart can't pump blood as well as it should, leading to fatigue, shortness of breath, and other symptoms.

  • Arrhythmia: This refers to irregular heartbeats, which can range from harmless to life-threatening, depending on the type.

For me this was a scary feeling when I sometimes felt like my heart was going to jump out of my chest, and another time the heart is beating weird. I used to put my hand over the muscle and massage it and take deep breaths. Irregular heartbeats happened to me temporarily – it was a side effect from the prescribed medication I was taking at the time. When I realized the medication was the cause I demanded the doctor change it.

  • Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD): This is a common circulatory problem where narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the limbs, which can cause leg pain and increase the risk of other cardiovascular events. This happened in my left leg and acupuncture and exercises helped me.

Let's Meet Jane and John!

Let's meet Jane, a heart attack survivor. She was only 45 when she had her first heart attack. Jane didn't realize that her lifestyle choices were contributing factors. After her recovery, she made significant changes to her diet and exercise routine, and today, she's an advocate for heart disease awareness.

Another story comes from John, whose father suffered from a stroke last year. John talks about how their family was taken aback by how swiftly their lives changed. John's father is now on a path of rehabilitation, and through this journey, their family has become more vigilant about their own heart health.

Myths and Misconceptions

Now, let’s tackle some myths. One common misconception is that heart disease is primarily an issue for older adults. No, no, nowadays young people are being diagnosed with heart disease, which I think is the result of an unhealthy diet.

In reality, lifestyle factors, genetics, and other conditions like diabetes can increase risk at any age.

Another myth is that women are less susceptible to heart attacks than men, which isn't true. Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in women as well.

I want you to know there are prevention strategies you can start taking now, right now. We're talking about the following proactive steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing cardiovascular disease, and it starts with making lifestyle changes that can have a profound impact on your health.

This I know for sure because this is what saved my life!

Lifestyle Changes To Reduce or Reverse Risk Factors

  • Diet: The foods we choose can be our greatest allies in achieving long-term health. Some ingredients are not just delicious but also instrumental in supporting weight loss by stabilizing blood sugar, balancing hormones, and ramping up metabolism. Without incorporating these powerhouse foods, even the most disciplined diet may not achieve its full potential as the body may resist change.

So, embrace a heart-healthy diet by increasing your intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Reduce saturated fats, trans fats, and added sugars. Consider joining my Mindful Eating Whole Plate Plan, that can help you gain lifelong tools for constructing meals that nurture you, building valuable habits that effortlessly integrate into your lifestyle, therein truly understanding cardiovascular disease.

  • Exercise: Aim to include at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week. This could be brisk walking, cycling, or even dancing. Physical activity helps maintain a healthy weight, lowers blood pressure, and strengthens your heart.

  • Stress Management: Take steps to manage stress through meditation, yoga, or other relaxation techniques. Chronic stress can contribute to heart disease, so finding ways to unwind and relax is beneficial. Connecting you to your power to self heal in all areas of your life.

  • Quit Smoking and Limit Alcohol: Smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, so quitting is one of the best things you can do for your heart. Additionally, limit alcohol intake to moderate levels—up to one drink per day for women and two for men.

Management Strategies

Along with lifestyle changes, for some people managing cardiovascular disease often involves some medical interventions and could include community support.

Medications:  If you are diagnosed with cardiovascular issues, medications like statins, beta-blockers, and ACE inhibitors can be effective in managing symptoms and preventing complications. Though it is vital to follow your healthcare provider's guidance.

I was prescribed statins and within a week I had a nosebleed, so I stopped taking it; and I’m glad I did.  Since then, I’ve relied on lifestyle changes.  Beta-Blockers and ACE Inhibitors nearly killed me due to my allergic reaction to them.

I am curious have you experienced any prescribed medications side effects? Share them with me at Donna@info-on-high-blood-pressure.com.

Regular Check-Ups:  Regular medical check-ups allow for early detection and monitoring of risk factors like hypertension and high cholesterol. Routine screenings can make all the difference in catching issues early.

Local Health Clinics:  Many communities offer resources like free or affordable health screenings. Do a search within your neighborhood and find out what's there to help you. These services can provide valuable insights into your heart health without breaking the bank.

Support Groups:  Support groups for individuals and families affected by heart disease can be incredibly supportive. Sharing experiences and strategies in a community setting can provide the emotional backing needed in challenging times.
