As I am writing, I vividly remember and practically feeling my heart pounding, palms clammy, as I sat in the sterile, too-bright office as my cardiologist's words shattered my world. Your cholesterol levels are alarmingly high at 252, he said, a number that hung heavy in the air, a grim reminder of my family's tragic history with cardiovascular disease. Memories of loved ones lost too soon surfaced, their faces flashing through my mind. The weight of it all was suffocating.


The prescribed statins seemed like the lifeline I desperately needed. But within a week, hope turned to horror as relentless nosebleeds drove me to the emergency room. I never imagined a nosebleed could feel like torture, a searing pain and discomfort that felt like my body was crying out, this isn't the way! I realized that swallowing another pill meant choosing a path similar to my previous struggles with high blood pressure medication, a life shackled by side effects and suffering.


Desperation turned to determination. I had to find a path to health that didn't involve medication. My journey led me to mindful eating and the whole plate approach, a lifeline I clung to with every fiber of my being.

Six months after my first blood test and being on the mindful eating whole plate plan, my cholesterol reading dropped to 238 from 252, then another six months later it is at 232, and that is without taking any medication. In another six months, I expect and am aiming for my total reading to be in the 180s with my HDL cholesterol - this is the good one, being much greater than the LDL - the bad cholesterol in another six months. And I achieved it!
