Fight Inflammation With These Heart Healthy Foods

November 4, 2016

With these heart healthy foods you can feast your way, during this holiday season, to better health.

Our topics for newsletter Issue #61 are:

Heart Healthy Foods That Fight Inflammation

Inflammation is a normal part of the body's immune response; because without it we cannot heal. But when inflammation is out of control stuff starts to happen within the body.

It plays a significant role in heart disease.

So with the holiday season fast approaching add these heart healthy foods to your menu for you, your family and guest to enjoy. You are adding cardiovascular protection to their diet.

Whatever meat, fish or dish that calls for seasoning with garlic and onion I use a lot of it. For me there is never enough garlic - if the recipe says two cloves you can be sure I have added six cloves.

Garlic has this compound that lowers the production of substances in the blood that boost inflammation. Learn more about the power of garlic.

Then there is onion, preferably red or yellow onions, another seasoning that has a flavonoid called Quercetin that helps inhibit inflammation causing agents at play when you have arthritis.

Remember to add dark leafy greens to the table. The vitamin E in them is key in your fight to control high blood pressure by providing your body with calcium and iron. These are disease fighting flavonoids.

Then there is tart cherries. Tart Cherries contains the highest anti-inflammatory content of any food. It is known to help athletes recover faster from intense workouts and decreases post-exertion muscle pain. So think what it would do for you.

HBP Health Tips - Corner

Eat this and not that they say to better control blood pressure but cutting down on salt alone is not good enough. With stress being a main part of the holiday season keeping your blood pressure levels down is very important.

Include some of these heart healthy foods like walnuts, cooking with extra virgin olive oil and consuming most of your grains as whole grains as opposed to refined can help keep harmful inflammation at bay.

Know that not all products labeled "whole-grain" are healthier than their refined counterparts. To be sure you are getting the right type of whole-grain, look for foods in which the total number of carbohydrate grams per serving is fewer than 10 times the number of fiber grams.
